Green Smoothies

green smoothieI’ve always liked smoothies, but not until recently did I start delving into adding vegetables into them. I must say that until recently the thought of adding spinach to my fruit seemed like a sin. However, so many people are doing it, I figured it couldn’t be that bad. And it’s true. Made with the right mix of ingredients, the greens go down easily & most of the time it’s like you don’t even know they’re there (taste-wise).

Adding fruits and vegetables into one may seem scary so I’m going to start with three recipes, beginner to more advanced, more advanced being more veggie tasting.

Few things to keep in mind:

1) I don’t give exact measurements because I think it depends on which flavors you want to highlight, I don’t know how many people you’re making it for, and some people like thicker/runnier smoothies.

2) Protein can be added to any of these recipes, depending on who you are and what you like. However, my recommendations would be that you use plant based proteins like a pea protein or spirulina as they are healthier and contain better nutrients for you. You can also add chia or flax seeds if you’re into that, they’re loaded with fiber and omega acids. I got these chia seeds at a local health food store for $8 the bag so not too bad.

3) I prefer not to add sugar, ever.

4) Make sure you wash your fruits and veggies properly, and that they’re all fresh. Try not to use frozen stuff unless you bought it fresh and froze it for later use yourself. You can always switch up ingredients to foods that are in season.

Beginner smoothie:
Handful of spinach or kale (per person)
Fresh pineapple chunks (no canned stuff)
Fresh mango slices
Few mints leaves
Organic Greek yogurt
Little bit of green tea or water (depending on the consistency you like)
–> This recipe will give you a great beginner’s smoothie and you won’t even know that you have spinach or kale in there. Added bonus: the sweetness from the fruits and yogurt means you need to add NO sugar, which is always great.

Green smoothieIntermediate smoothie:
Handful of spinach or kale (per person)
Chopped strawberries
Blueberries
Banana
Half a beet (a little steamed or it will be too hard to blend)
A little water if needed
–> This is an intermediate recipe because we’re jumping to two veggies, but the beet will really be a sweetener so it won’t be an overpowering taste of vegetables and the blueberries are great antioxidants.

Expert smoothie:
Handful of spinach or kale (per person)
Sliced cucumbers
Papaya chunks
Green apple chunks
Half a steamed carrot
A little water if needed
–> This recipe moves into expert territory because the cucumber will highlight the veggie taste. That said, the apple and carrot will sweeten it up.
